Childhood Trauma Practitioners Assembly July
14 – 17, 2009 Dear Colleagues, This summer we present out fourth annual Childhood Trauma Practitioners Assembly. The 350 participants in attendance last year returned to their practices with practical strategies and programs the presenters themselves found most helpful in their practice with traumatized children, adolescents and families. Our theme this year is Raising Resilient Children in a Traumatic World. The one question TLC asked in its 2007-2008 evidence based research of 110 traumatized children 6-12 years of age was, “What allowed some of these children to do better than the others exposed to the same or similar traumatic incidents?” Findings were used to help us select our keynote presenter as well as workshops. These findings (quantitative and qualitative) also provided the data needed to develop a new program A Time for Resilience, which will be available at the Assembly. All participants will receive a copy of the research outcomes also being published by Children and Schools and School Social Work Journal. We are quite excited about A Time for Resilience as it provides our 5,000 Certified Trauma Specialists and Consultants additional strength based activities to support and help trauma victims not only survive but also thrive. Our keynote presenter, Nan Henderson, who’s publications on resilience are used in more than 25 countries and her publication, Resiliency in Schools: Making It Happen for Students and Educators (Corwin Press, 2002) a bestseller, will start the week off by presenting us with strategies for helping our at-risk, traumatized kids become resilient kids. Everyone who registers for TLC Certification will be able to complete TLC Certification by attending the four-day Assembly followed by completing an online course or exam any time after the Assembly. We’re excited to be able to include the keynote presentation Resiliency in Action as fulfilling requirement for all levels of certification. All additional workshops will also fulfill requirements for those seeking on-going certification. I look forward to seeing you this summer. William Steele, MSW, PsyD
